Red Arrows over Swansea Bay

Shot details: Nikon D90 with Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 lens @ 300mm & 1/1000sec f/9 ISO 200
Location: Swansea Bay, Abertawe

The Red Arrows fly over Swansea Bay, in perfect formation as always. This was their superb demonstration of skills during the Wales National Air Show, part of the Summer Festival.

This is one of several pictures I managed to get that shows just how tight and skilled this team is, superb formation.

This shot was taken only a matter of weeks before Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging sadly lost his life when his Hawk T1 aircraft – Red 4 – crashed around 1km South East of Bournemouth Airport at 1350 on Saturday 20 August 2011 following a similar display there.

Edit Nov 2011: Later in the year on 8th November, Flight Lieutenant Sean Cunningham tragically died when he was ejected from his plane whilst it was still on the runway at RAF Scampton. A pilot should be able to survive being ejected at ground level, however in Fl Lt Cunningham’s case it appears that he did not separate from the seat as he should have and the parachute did not deploy. There is also the question as to why the ejector seat activated in the first place.
