Blue Tit Nest Box – The First Egg

We are fairly confident the birds started to build a nest on 5th April. It was definately empty on 4th and by Friday 6th it was looking like this:

The birds were in an out for the next 17-18 days, sometimes taking stuff in, sometimes taking it out again. Anyway, it apears that they eventually managed to put things together to their satisfaction and the first egg was laid on Monday 23rd April.

Blue Tit
Breeding Starts: Mid April
Number of clutches: 1-2 (2 is rare)
Number of eggs: 5-16
Incubation: 12-16 days
Fledge: 15-23 days

It’s only just visible but it is definately an egg. Since this sighting the female has been making a point of covering up the egg(s) but we had seen at least 3 by Wednesday this week. She will lay approxiamtely one egg per day up to about 9/10 eggs, woodland blue tits can lay more, up to 16.

The female is roosting in the box overnight and is coming back to the box infrequently during the day. She tends to return for the night quite early, anything from 18.30 onwards.

Incubation will not start until all eggs have been laid, this ensures all will hatch at approximately the same time. If we manage to get any clearer images of the eggs, I’ll post them on the site. Otherwise, you can keep a look out for yourself on the webcam page.

If you see anything, please let us know by leaving a comment on any of the pages.

  1. Thank you – you are the first person who has confirmed the female roosts in the nesting box during egg laying…ours spent her first night in the box after laying one egg.. she seems to push the eggs (we have 2 to date)to one side and still faffs around with the nest itself.. in fact she has not got a nice bottom to the nest yet… she seems to be laying on near bare wood but with plenty of stuff around her!

    1. Hi, Congratulations!

You’ll see she will pretty much constantly re-arrange the bottom of the nest, especially once the chicks hatch.

    2. Thank you! You have put my mind to rest.. even after 4 of my own children many moons ago, I am finding this all a bit nail-biting and stressful 🙂
